Once upon a time, I believed that when you finally arrived at the top of your game, you'd stop hearing the voice of doubt in your mind — that your confidence would be unshakeable and your optimism unbreakable.
But after meeting countless cream-of-the-crop rainmakers and top-of-the-top leaders, I am now 100% convinced that even the most talented and confident people you've ever met, occasionally bump into an obstacle that they aren't sure they can overcome, or face a change they aren't sure they can adapt to.
From time to time, EVERYONE hears the voice of their Survival Instinct telling them things like...
"you're not ready for this."
"you don't have all the right experience."
"you don't have all the necessary skills."
And guess what? I'm not going to tell you that voice is lying to you. It's not.
But here's the not-so-big secret of top performers: This voice is only telling you A truth, not THE truth.
That voice is omitting the fact that you have never—not even once—embarked on a new opportunity fully armed right from the start with ALL the skills, talent, and knowledge you thought you needed to succeed. But over and over and over again, you have found a way to grow ENOUGH of the skills and ENOUGH of the knowledge you actually needed to succeed.
The point is this: Your doubts do not disqualify you.
Your doubts only give you direction about which new skills you need to grow first...little by little, day by day...just like you've done hundreds of times before throughout your life and your career.
